Is asbestos training a legal requirement?

Employers are legally obligated to assess and determine the appropriate asbestos training for their employees, ensuring that the training provided is ‘adequate’ according to legal regulations. In particular, asbestos awareness (Category A) training is legally mandated for all individuals who might come into contact with asbestos in their work.

For more information, please visit the FAQs section of the online Asbestos Awareness Course (Category A).

How long does it take to complete your online Asbestos Awareness Course (Category A)?

The online Asbestos Awareness Course (Category A) normally takes about 1-2 hours to complete. You do have the flexibility to pause and resume each module at a time convenient for you. There is no set time limit to complete the course.

How often should asbestos awareness training be refreshed?

Asbestos awareness training should be refreshed regularly to ensure that knowledge and awareness remain current, although the Health and Safety Executive do not specify a set period. Updating your knowledge regularly means that you can take into account any changes in legislation, safety practices and reinforce your existing knowledge. You also need to take into account the nature of your work and any employer health and safety policies which may stipulate a time period when you must retake your asbestos awareness training. We will send you a reminder to repeat your asbestos awareness (Category A) training after 2 years.

Does asbestos awareness training cover me to remove asbestos?

No, asbestos awareness training does not qualify you to remove asbestos. This type of training is designed to help individuals recognise and understand the risks associated with asbestos, but it does not provide the skills or legal certification required for asbestos removal. If you need to remove asbestos, you must complete either Category B or Category C training, course depending on the nature and extent of the work. In addition, handling asbestos often requires a specific licence and adherence to strict health and safety regulations.
