1. Introduction

In this module, we’ll explore the terms ‘child protection’ and ‘safeguarding’. You’ll understand key phrases and their significance in protecting and safeguarding children. Gaining clarity on terms like ‘child in need’ and ‘significant harm’ will help you understand the terminology used in child protection.

2. Legislation and Guidance

Safeguarding and child protection follow a structured framework of guidelines and legal processes. This module gives an overview of that framework and processes. 

The module also covers the key organisations involved in safeguarding, outlining their roles and protection guidelines.

By the end of the module, you’ll have a clearer understanding of safeguarding guidance, the connected agencies and the legalities of safeguarding. You’ll also learn how these agencies work together to tackle the issue of abuse.

3. What is Child Abuse and Neglect?

To combat child abuse effectively, we must clearly define and understand its manifestations. Recognising different abuse categories helps us identify its signs.

By the end of this module, you’ll have a better understanding of child abuse and its specific types.

4. Signs and Indicators of Abuse and Neglect

Children and young people might find it hard to express the abuse they face. Their anxiety might manifest through altered or challenging behaviours, signalling potential abuse. Recognising these signs can be the initial indicator of potential abuse.

By the end of the module, you’ll better understand the definitions of abuse and the signs and indicators associated with various types of abuse.

5. Maintaining a Child Focus

Safeguarding and addressing potential abuse must prioritise the child’s safety and well-being. Staying child-centred is crucial, this module uses a realistic scenario to illustrate a child-focused approach.

By the end of this module, you will better understand what it means to be child-focused and how you can achieve it. 

6. Responding to Concerns

Building on previous discussions about collaboration between agencies and recognising abuse signs and types, this module explores the different ways abuse is disclosed.

Timely and appropriate reactions to abuse disclosures are key. We’ll guide you through the right procedures, highlighting recommended and discouraged actions for the best outcome.

By the end of this module, you’ll know how to handle potential abuse situations and address concerns about an adult’s behavior. A step-by-step guide for referrals is also provided.

The certificates include a verification number so anybody can authenticate the certificate’s legitimacy.

Our certifications include a renewal date but there is no legal requirement to renew your training and certificate within a specific timeframe. However, we do recommend that you arrange refresher training after 2 years as safeguarding guidance does change. You should update your safeguarding knowledge and skills regularly.
