1. Introduction

Unfortunately, many people face abuse and neglect, and it can be hard for them to find someone to talk to. Stables might be the safe place where they feel comfortable sharing their experiences.

In this module, you’ll learn what child protection and adult safeguarding involve. If someone confides in you or if you suspect an issue, you’ll know how to respond. By the end of the module, you’ll understand important safeguarding terms.

2. Legislation and Guidance

This module explains the framework of guidance and legal procedures for safeguarding children, young people and at risk adults, following the standards set by the British Equestrian Federation. You’ll also learn about your duty of care as an equestrian coach/instructor.

By the end of the module, you’ll have a clear understanding of safeguarding principles and it also introduces the role of a Safeguarding Officer.

3. What is Abuse?

To help prevent abuse, it’s important to clearly understand what abuse is and how to identify its signs. This module will help you recognise the different types of abuse and their indicators.

By the end of the module, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what abuse entails and its various forms.

4. Signs and Indicators of Abuse and Neglect

People facing abuse can find it hard to speak up, often showing their distress through unusual or difficult behaviors. It’s vital to spot these signs since abusers might hide their actions well, sometimes seeming very kind.

In this module, you’ll learn how to identify the various signs of abuse and understand what abuse really means.

5. A Person-Centred Focus

This module focuses on the person-centered approach to safeguarding, emphasising the importance of understanding individual needs and involving the person closely in the process.

6. Responding to Concerns

In this module, we expand on earlier lessons about recognising abuse and prioritising the individual’s needs. You’ll learn how to respond properly to abuse disclosures, including when and how to maintain confidentiality, and when and to whom to report concerns.

By the end of the module, you’ll know the right steps to take in a potential abuse situation.

7. Complaints and Allegations

Families going through safeguarding or child protection can complain if they want to. It’s the job of the Safeguarding Officer to make sure every complaint is taken seriously and handled fairly.

In this module, you’ll learn the right way to deal with complaints and allegations.
