Frequently Asked Questions

What is COSHH and why is training important?
COSHH (which stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) consists of a set of regulations that require employers to control their staff’s exposure to hazardous substances and for employees who work or encounter hazardous substances to have the knowledge of how to work with them safely. Under the COSHH Regulations (2002) and subsequent amendments, employers are legally required to provide adequate training to employees who work with hazardous substances.
If these regulations are not followed there may be legal consequences and lead to reputational damage. COSHH training ensures that employees are well informed about COSHH obligations, understand the risks associated with hazardous substances and learn how to safely handle, store and dispose of them. It helps prevent accidents, injuries, and long-term health problems, as well as ensures they meet their legal duty to protect the health and safety of their employees.
How often should you do COSHH training?
Employers should make sure that employees who start a new role working with hazardous substances receive COSHH training and this is tailored to their needs. The COSHH training should be refreshed regularly so employees are up to date with the latest processes and best practices. There is no legal expiry date for COSHH training, and it is at the employers’ discretion as to how often COSHH training is refreshed. This can depend on the nature of the business/setting, the types of hazardous substances used and the level of risk involved in conjunction with the risk assessment findings. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides further advice and guidance on COSHH.
Is COSHH training a legal requirement?
Employers are legally required to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and the subsequent 2004 amendment. The regulations make it a legal requirement for employers to establish a range of measures to reduce these risks, including training. As a result, employers must ensure their employees have the knowledge and skills to ensure legal compliance and protect their staff’s health. Training is key to ensuring this as if this regulation is not followed, then there may be legal consequences and damage to a business’s reputation. Course certificates can be shown as evidence that employees have received comprehensive COSHH training.
Who needs COSHH training?
Employers must provide training, information and instruction for any employees who work with substances hazardous to health. This is the last step in the eight basic measures that should be taken to comply with the regulations surrounding COSHH. Our COSHH training is accessible and relevant to all levels of employees who regularly or may encounter hazardous substances in the workplace.
Is asbestos included in COSHH?
Asbestos, though a hazardous material, is not covered under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002. Instead, asbestos safety is regulated by its own specific set of regulations, known as The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. This is because asbestos is considered hazardous enough to warrant its own dedicated rules and guidelines, separate from the general provisions of COSHH.
