Should I get a food hygiene certificate for my home-based food business?

Yes, if you’re making money from the food you prepare at home and have registered as a business. In addition to the required training, your home food business needs to be registered with your Local Authority.

Do I need a food hygiene certificate to sell cakes?

If you’re selling cakes on an occasional basis, you don’t need a food hygiene certificate. However, if it’s part of a business venture, you will need to follow the guidelines; although while it’s not legally required, training helps you comply with UK food laws.

Do I need a food hygiene certificate to sell sweets?

Selling sweets is similar to selling cakes. If you’re a registered confectionary business, it’s good practice to demonstrate compliance with food safety laws by taking food hygiene training, even if you sell packaged sweets from home. If you’re only selling sweets on a small scale and not for profit, a food hygiene certificate is not required.

Will I be able to prove I have passed the food hygiene course to any potential customers?

Yes, after course completion, you will receive a downloadable certificate, which you can print out, display and show potential customers.
