Our online Safeguarding for Music Groups training provides leaders and organisers of amateur and leisure-time music groups with the knowledge to handle both their children and adults at risk safeguarding responsibilities effectively. The course offers guidance on how to recognise, respond to and report signs of abuse and neglect and understanding best practices for using technology and mobile devices, while outlining the relevant legal frameworks.

This is an introductory course requiring no prior knowledge. If you are a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), then you will need to take our more advanced online Designated Safeguarding Lead Training course in addition this one. We also offer DSL training suitable for both children and adults at risk, our online Safeguarding Lead Training for Children and Vulnerable Adults course.

If you require safeguarding training for individuals who teach or tutor children in music education, our online Safeguarding in Music Education course may be more suitable.

Abuse and neglect is unfortunately still common issues in the UK. This module will help you understand the essential terms and concepts used in safeguarding.

By the end of this module, you’ll be more aware of who is most at risk, understand the extent of these issues and know the meaning of key safeguarding and child protection terms.

2. Legislation and Guidance

This module introduces key UK legislations and guidelines established to safeguard individuals. You’ll learn about the primary documents and organisations responsible for handling safeguarding concerns and whom you might contact in case issues arise.

By the end of the module, you will understand that safeguarding is a community responsibility and know the appropriate channels for reporting concerns.

3. What is Abuse and Neglect?

This module will explain the forms of abuse affecting both children and adults, detailing the specific categories of abuse along with their signs and symptoms.

By the end of the module, you will be able to identify signs of various types of abuse and understand how to recognise potential abusive behaviour.

4. Signs and Indicators of Abuse and Neglect

As previous modules highlighted, children may struggle to talk about abuse and abusers might effectively hide their actions, so recognising potential signs of abuse is therefore crucial.

By the end of this module, you’ll be more familiar with identifying signs of physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as neglect. You’ll also learn the key safeguarding responsibilities of music education professionals.

5. Maintaining a Person Centred Focus

In this module, you’ll learn the importance of prioritising the safety of the individual in safeguarding and addressing potential abuse scenarios. We’ll emphasise a person-centred approach, which encourages swift response to reports of issues to prevent repeated incidents.

By the end of this module, you’ll understand the fundamentals of a person-centred approach in safeguarding.

6. Responding to Concerns

In this module, we build on what we’ve learned so far. You’ll discover when and whom to report concerns and will be guided on how to respond correctly to any abuse disclosures.

You’ll learn your duties in documenting decisions and actions when working with susceptible individuals.

By the end of the module, you’ll know the right steps to take in potential abuse situations, including how to address concerns about an adult’s behaviour. The module includes a handy step-by-step guide for reporting concerns.

7. Best Practices for Using Devices and Technology

This module looks at the best practices for using mobile devices safely and effectively for group leaders and all those involved with running music groups. It reviews strategies for managing individuals’ data responsibly and ensuring privacy and security. The module also emphasises the importance of aligning technology use with cybersecurity policies and safeguarding standards.

By the end of this module, you’ll understand how to incorporate the secure use of technology into your music group setting.

For safeguarding training specific to children’s music education or tutoring, our online Safeguarding in Music Education course may be more applicable.

Certification

This online Safeguarding for Music Groups course is accredited by The CPD Group.

Upon successful completion of this online course, you’ll be sent a personalised digital certificate as a PDF, enabling you to download and print it.

You can access a copy, reprint or download this certificate on our LMS (Learning Management System). This is your proof that you have been trained in safeguarding best practices and achieved compliance. The certificates include a verification number so anybody can authenticate the certificate’s legitimacy.

Our certifications include a renewal date but there is no legal requirement to renew your training and certificate within a specific timeframe. However, we do recommend that you arrange refresher training after 2 years as safeguarding guidance does change. You should update your safeguarding knowledge and skills regularly.
