Unfortunately child abuse, radicalisation, cyberbullying and child sexual exploitation are common today. This module will familiarise you with key safeguarding phrases and explains important safeguarding terms and ideas that are central to the course.
By the end of the module, you’ll better understand who is most at risk of abuse, the extent of its occurrence and the meanings of terms such as ‘child protection’ and ‘safeguarding’.
2. Safeguarding Terms and Legislation
This module will familiarise you with safeguarding terminology, explaining essential terms and ideas crucial for the remainder of the course.
By the end of the module, you’ll better understand definitions for terms like ‘child’ and ‘safeguarding’. Additionally, you’ll gain insight into the legislation and guidance relevant to your role as a childminder.
3. Components of a Childminder's Role
Given your regular interactions with the children in your care, you are uniquely positioned to spot and address concerns related to their well-being. This module provides an outline of what’s expected from your safeguarding policy and offers guidance on establishing yourself as a safeguarding contact within your community. This module focuses on safeguarding’s role in online safety. It offers an overview of the potential risks children face online, including grooming, sexting and cyberbullying, among others. You’ll also be informed about the legal stance if you come across an incident and be guided on strategies to empower children to navigate online spaces safely and report concerns.
Upon completing this module, you’ll be understand the dangers linked with technology, the various different areas of online safeguarding, specific threats children might encounter and best practices for online safety.
6. Radicalisation and Extremism
All childminders have a legal duty to try and prevent children from being drawn into extremism. Childminders should try and confront extremist notions and identifying when children may be susceptible. Ofsted expects that childminders can actively take steps to help children avoid radicalisation and extremist perspectives.
This module explores how radicalisation can impact young individuals, helps identify groups that might attempt to indoctrinate them and contextualises the Prevent strategy.

Quick and appropriate responses to abuse disclosures are critical. This module outlines the necessary steps and highlights the dos and don’ts to achieve the best outcome.
Upon completing this module, you’ll be more knowledgeable about the steps to take when faced with a potential abuse situation. You’ll also learn how to address concerns regarding an adult’s behavior. The module includes a step-by-step guide to assist you in reporting any issues you might encounter.
9. Assessment Framework
This module explores the procedures for addressing situations where a child might be considered ‘in need’ in some way. Various agencies collaborate using guidelines to establish a consistent approach to child protection.
By the end of the module, you’ll be more familiar with the Assessment Framework and will understand your responsibilities as a childminder within local policies and legal regulations.
10. Communication: Recording and Sharing Information

In your area, these agencies collaborate with entities like the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB)/Safeguarding Partners or Child Protection Committees to uphold policy standards.
By the end of the module, you’ll better understand how to collaborate with agencies to protect children. Additionally, you’ll learn strategies to minimise complaints against you and address any that arise.
